Governor Snyder’s Signing of Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Is Important Milestone Toward Protecting Michigan Residents

Today, we applaud Governor Rick Snyder for signing reforms into law that bring greater fairness and transparency to the state’s civil asset forfeiture procedures. With 80% of Michigan voters behind such civil asset forfeiture reforms, this law was necessary to protect Michigan residents and their property from forfeiture without proper evidence.

From Executive Director Holly Harris:

“Today marks a great step forward in protecting Michigan property rights. The bills the Governor signed into law today ensure the civil asset forfeiture process is fairer and more transparent. We are proud of the bipartisan support this law has attracted and appreciate the leadership shown by the bills’ sponsors. We look forward to working with members of both parties to take further steps toward making the criminal justice system smarter and more effective.”
